Jacob B. "Jake" Tingley arrived in southwestern Oklahoma in 1900 and began his Indian trading operation as an itinerant trader, traveling with his wagon to trade utensils and household items to Indians and non-Indians alike. Jake and his daughter, Irma, built one of the longest operating Indian stores and most significant collections of American Indian art and artifacts (see 92.011) in existence in Oklahoma and the Plains. Tingley's Indian Store conducted business in Anadarko until the death of Jake's youngest son, Vinson, in 1990. The store and its contents then became part of his estate. As executor of the estate, Vinson's son, Roger Sinclair, sold the collection intact to the Institute of the Great Plains.
